Our New Bus: 1971 VW Type 2 Transporter
So, I've been looking for a new project.. a new bus. Ideally I would have liked to have gotten a mid-60's V front splitty but they're hard to come by and go quick. Also tend to be very expensive even if they're in horrible condition.
Today, I found one and talked to the guy. It had been put in a rig so it could get rolled around while all the rust was repaired. He had done a great job and was doing a frame up restoration... alas, money and time ran short and he was selling it. The pictures didn't tell that story but he did.
After talking with him and thinking through it, I wrote him and told him I was going to pass. That would be years of work and a LOT of money. Maybe someday.
Well, I was sitting there all depressed and having gone through craigslist a TON decided to go through again. I was searching not 4 minutes after a new bus had been posted... located about 20 minutes away. I called, talked to the guy and set a time to see it.
Went to see it, test drove, my kids bounced around in it and I bought it.
It's a 1971 Volkswagen Bus and it's in one of the best midwest conditions I've ever seen. Very little rust. It's been garaged or something. A few of the normal areas had rust that had been repaired well.
The best part about this bus is the engine. The guy I bought it from rehabs them for a hobby. It's a dual carb 1800. Very powerful and very pretty.
The interior is in really good condition... normal rips/tears, but nothing bad. Headliner is really decent too. Even has the original stereo!
All in all, this was a really amazing find. Price was beyond good.
I'm happy and already have a shopping list of things that need to be done. Just need to moderate the purchases so as not to overwhelm my checkbook.

Wow, very nice find. Nice wheels too. Enjoy your new project.
Sweet!!! The alarm clock would have been more cost effective but not nearly as fun :)
Congrats on your new edition and look forward to seeing progress reports.
